Are there different types of Spas?
R/There is a wide variety of spa types although the most popular ones are classified as follows:

  • Day Spa – Spa´s in which you may go for the day to enjoy a variety of treatments related to spa services including massages, facials and body treatments among others. They are classified as day spas as you do not spend the night at the premises.
     
  • Resort Spa – Spa´s facilities which are located within a hotel and/or boutique hotel and where treatments can be enjoyed while staying overnight at the premises.  Usually resort spas do not include meals during your stay as part of the spa package, and they are a great option for combining your wellness vacation with other activities and/or interests on site. Wellness Latin America classifies available Resort Spa´s in Costa Rica as follows:

    • Resort Spa Standard – Good quality spa treatments performed within the resort   but with limited facilities and types of treatments. . Usually basic resort spas offer only one treatment room or treatments could also be done at the guest´s room.
       
    • Resort Spa Superior – Good quality spa treatments performed by professional therapists within the resort. Standard Resort Spa´s offer a wider range of spa treatments and services available including more than one treatment room, spa relaxation areas, independent changing facilities and whirlpool among others.
       
    • Resort Spa Deluxe – Combines deluxe accommodations with world class spa services including an extensive variety of treatments, highly skilled professional therapists and top of the line facilities for an exceptional spa experience.
  • Destination Spa – Spa´s where you stay overnight and where guests look for a comprehensive experience to achieve a healthier lifestyle through spa treatments, exercise, healthy food and educational workshops.  Some destination spa facilities require a minimum stay and it is a great option for those looking for emphasis on wellness in every aspect during their stay.
     
  • Eco-Friendly Spa – This is one of the newest spa trends in the world.  Not only the spa´s combines the benefits of nature within its treatments, products and environment for a positive wellness effect over the body and mind, but also eco-friendly and sustainable practices are done in order to save the planet.  
     
  • Mineral Spring Spa – Either day, resort or destination spa in which thermal, natural mineral or seawater is used on hydrotherapy treatments.


Are spas mostly geared to wealthy people?
R/This is a misconception which is rapidly disappearing as these days spas are for everyone and plenty of them with affordable prices. There is a wide variety of spa experience options suitable for any budget without compromising good quality service.

Are Spa´s Co-Ed?
R/Majority of spas provides services for both genders with separate facilities such as locker rooms and showers. It is likely that both genders will share certain areas such as rest areas, patios, reception or dining areas.

Should I reserve in advance my Spa treatments?
R/Booking in advance your spa treatments is a very good idea.  Don´t wait until you get there! You may not get the times and treatments you want. Booking in advance will not cost you more than reserving on site and will assure availability as many spa treatments have limited availability.

Can I choose either a male or female therapist?
R/Yes, you may choose if your therapist should be male or female. Due to availability we recommend this to be requested in advance.

Is tipping a normal practice in Spas?
R/In the case of spa treatments, the usual tip is about 10-15% for those treatments that goes “above and beyond” your expectations.  Our tip would be that if you received a treatment better than you expected, then tip. If the service was as you expected tip but not so much. If the service did not meet your expectations it is appreciated that you provide a feedback to the spa manager and Wellness Latin America offices to have the opportunity to learn of any shortcomings.

At what time should I arrive to my appointment?
R/It is a good practice to arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. This will give you time to relax and in many cases take advantage of other spa facilities such as saunas, steam bath, and hot or cold plunge pools either before or after the treatment. It is a good practice to have a hot shower previous to your treatment.

What should I wear when visiting a spa?
R/Modesty should never be compromised at the spa. Most of the time you will provided with a robe and slippers to use while on the premises.  Most of the massage therapies are done nude but you are covered with sheets. Only the body part being massaged is exposed. You may wear underwear if it makes you feel more comfortable. Always remove any jewelry before the treatment.

Can I visit a spa with my child?
R/Several spas will allow for minors to be within their facilities, and in many cases, there are treatments specially designed for minors.  Although please note that spas are havens for of rest and relaxation and in certain cases children do not always complement the peaceful environment. Please check with us for guidelines according to selected spa(s).

Can I take with me a cell phone or Blackberry while at the spa?
R/One of the Spas objectives is to provide an atmosphere of peace and tranquility to set aside the noise and rush of the world outside. Most spas will request for you to turn off cell phone and pagers during your visit.

How long can I stay in the treatment room?
R/Once your treatment finished, your therapist will extend an invitation to “take your time getting up”.  Although there is no rush, it is appropriate to take a time of 5 to 10 minutes for getting dressed.

How long can I stay at the spa facilities?
R/You are welcome to stay as long as you like. Take advantage of the facilities relaxation rooms, steam baths and other water features to complement your relaxing experience.

Should I talk during my treatment?

R/It is up to you, your therapist will follow. If you are quiet, they will be too. Although do speak up if you feel uncomfortable due to the treatment or the ambiance as the intent is to have a perfect spa experience. Always advise your therapists of any particular injury or physical condition.

What happens if I fall asleep?
R/Do not worry about falling asleep. It is the ultimate step in relaxation.
