Marino Las Baulas National Park
Located next to Tamarindo, the Marino Las Baulas National Park protects the beaches of Playa Grande, Langosta, Carbon and Ventanas, as well as the Tamarindo estuary and mangroves at the mouth of the Matapalo River and the San Francisco river estuary. The park is considered the largest nesting colony on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica for the Giant Leatherback sea turtles, with a population size of approximately 800 female turtles per year. Leatherbacks are the largest of the planets seven species of turtles, averaging 770 pounds and more than 5 feet in length. With a nesting season from November through April, witnessing the life cycle of these ancient giants is a moving experience that reminds visitors of how fragile nature is and what a great responsibility we have to protect it for future generations. Guided tours are available in conjunction with the park employees. For a minimum impact, a limited number of visitors are allowed each evening.
Surfing
The area of Tamarindo and the nearby beaches of Langosta, Playa Grande and Avellanas are considered to be one of the most popular all year round surfing spots on the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Tamarindo, once considered a “secret-spot” among the surfing elite, came into spotlight to the world since the filming of “Endless Summer II”. The area is blessed with consistent swells and off-shore conditions. If you plan to stay at Tamarindo Beach, the area offers El Estero, which is an excellent river mouth break where the estuary hits the ocean or Pico Pequeno, which is a lava finger reef which can get perfect swell.
Other options in the area include Langosta Beach with its rights and lefts breaking over rocks and sand in front of a river mouth. Playa Grande offers a very consistent beach break with perfect left and right peaks and Playa Avellanas include 5 different good reef and sand breaks with semi-hollow lefts and rights. Please take into consideration that surfing expeditions can be arranged from this area in order to visit the beautiful and remote Roca Bruja (Witches Rock) considered one of the most famous breaks in the country due to its fast hollow rights or to Ollie’s Point break with its fast hollow right as seen on The Endless Summer II movie.
